Naval Station Norfolk Closes Some Gates and Cuts Lanes as Precaution

NORFOLK — Naval Station Norfolk, the U.S. Navy installation on Sewell’s Point that Navy Region Mid-Atlantic describes as the largest naval complex in the world, stated on September 1 that it had put in place increased security measures and changed how people enter the base.

The installation said some gates were closed or were running with fewer lanes and told personnel to expect delays and to allow extra time to get on the base. It said it was watching developments with law enforcement and security partners and would change the measures as needed.

The notice named no specific threat, published no Force Protection Condition, the five-level U.S. military system that sets how tightly an installation is guarded, and did not list which gates were shut.

It said further information would be released when it was available and appropriate for public release. U.S. Fleet Forces Command, Commander, Navy Installations Command, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic, and U.S. Northern Command had issued no matching public notice on the same measure as of 3:48 a.m. UTC on September 1.

Location

Naval Station Norfolk sits on Sewell’s Point in Norfolk, Virginia, on the Hampton Roads harbor, about 150 miles (241 km) south of Washington. Navy Region Mid-Atlantic states that the complex supports the operational readiness of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet.

Approximate installation coordinates, taken from the U.S. Geological Survey place record for Naval Station Norfolk, are 36.94, -76.30. The September 1 notice applied to access onto that installation. It did not name any other base.

Joint Task Force-Southern Border Uses Army High-Energy Laser Against Three Cartel Drones

SOUTHERN BORDER — On August 27 U.S. Southern Command reported that Joint Task Force-Southern Border personnel used the Army Multipurpose High Energy Laser (AMP-HEL) during the late-night hours of August 25 and 26 against three unmanned aircraft the command called hostile and cartel-linked.

The weapon is a directed-energy system. It burns or disables a target with a focused beam rather than a missile.

The aircraft were judged hostile, the command said, because they were used in direct support of activity posing a physical threat to U.S. military personnel and U.S. Customs and Border Protection partners.

NORTH AMERICA — On August 8 the National Interagency Fire Center said 97 large fires remained under containment efforts across the United States, with 83 new fires and 9 new large fires recorded in the preceding 24 hours, while British Columbia authorities stated a provincial state of emergency after the Bald Range fire forced the evacuation of the District of Summerland and surrounding areas.

The U.S. total of personnel assigned stood at 30,636, including 661 crews, 1,856 engines and 204 helicopters, according to the National Interagency Fire Center National Fire News of August 8. Twenty-six complex incident management teams and one national incident management organization were committed.

August Satellite Footage Of Wildfires Burning In Washington and Oregon

Year-to-date U.S. figures reached 45,659 fires and 6,266,601 acres burned, according to the same National Fire News release. National Preparedness Level remained at 5.

In Canada, the Canadian Wildland Fire Information System listed 4,582 fires year-to-date and 3,988,371 hectares burned as of August 8, with 625 active fires.

National Preparedness Level stood at 5, with British Columbia at Agency Preparedness Level 5 and Ontario at 4. New fires that day totaled 25, of which 14 were human-caused, 1 natural and 10 undetermined.

British Columbia listed 105 active wildfires, of which 52 were out of control.

The Bald Range fire, discovered the afternoon of August 7 west of Summerland, grew under southwest winds to an estimated 9,500 hectares by the morning of August 8 and remained out of control.

EmergencyInfoBC and the Office of the Premier placed roughly 21,700 people under evacuation order and an additional 9,700 under alert.

Oregon Guard Chinooks and Black Hawks Sustain Water Drops on Hagen Fire

OREGON — Two Oregon Army National Guard CH-47 Chinook helicopters and two HH-60M Black Hawk helicopters began water-bucket operations on July 29 in support of wildland firefighting on the Hagen Fire in Umatilla County.

The aircraft flew from Army Aviation Support Facility No. 2 in Pendleton after receiving a state active-duty activation order and completing joint reception, staging, onward movement and integration on July 28.

Aircrews completed 44 water-bucket drops that day, delivering approximately 50,070 gallons of water, according to the Oregon National Guard.

As of July 29 the Hagen Fire had burned approximately 33,504 acres and stood at 3 percent contained, according to the Oregon Department of Forestry. The National Interagency Fire Center listed the same acreage and containment figure in its July 31 situation report, noting active fire behavior with uphill runs, torching and spotting, plus threats to residences and energy infrastructure.

The activation layered the water-bucket mission onto an earlier state active-duty MEDEVAC HH-60M Black Hawk already supporting the Oregon Department of Forestry.

With the July 28 expansion, approximately 25 Oregon National Guard service members and five helicopters were assigned to the wildfire response under Ops Plan Smokey.

Coordination with the Oregon Department of Forestry and partner agencies included representatives from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection assisting with helicopter management.

Gina Miner, assistant area director for the Oregon Department of Forestry’s Eastern Oregon Area, stated that the National Guard aircraft are expected to continue supporting firefighting efforts as long as needed based on ground conditions.

Foreign vessels are permitted to operate within the U.S. exclusive economic zone and over the U.S. extended continental shelf, but the service remains vigilant to ensure their activities comply with established international laws.

Conducting marine scientific research within this area would require advance permission from the United States and subsequent sharing of the information collected.

In recent years, the Coast Guard has observed heightened activity in the U.S. Arctic and anticipates a continued and increased presence in the region this summer.

Rear Adm. Bob Little, U.S. Coast Guard Arctic District commander, stated that the service, alongside the Department of War, the Department of State, and international partners, is actively responding to competitor activities across an increasingly contested Arctic.

The Chinese vessels form part of China’s 16th Arctic Ocean scientific expedition, which departed Dalian on July 3.

The fleet includes Xue Long, Xue Long 2, and Jidi, with Tansuo-3 expected to join later. The expedition is scheduled to continue until early October and focuses on surveys of sea ice, hydrology, biology, ecology, and atmospheric conditions in key Arctic areas.

Previous Coast Guard responses to Chinese research vessels in the U.S. Arctic occurred in 2025, including monitoring of Xue Long 2 approximately 290 nautical miles north of Utqiagvik on dates in July of that year and responses to multiple vessels operating over the U.S. extended continental shelf on August 5, August 6, and later dates in August and September 2025 under the same Operation Frontier Sentinel framework.

NORAD Responds to More Than a Dozen TFR Violations in New York/New Jersey

NEW YORK/NEW JERSEY REGION — North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) conducted at least three documented F-16 intercepts in response to more than a dozen unauthorized Temporary Flight Restriction violations in the New York and New Jersey region since June 6.

The command responded to nine general aviation aircraft that violated FAA TFR airspace over Bedminster, New Jersey, over one weekend and reached a cumulative total of 15 unauthorized incursions near Bedminster by June 8.

All aircraft were safely escorted out of the area. The Continental U.S. NORAD Region also enforced an FAA VIP TFR over New York on June 8 and issued public advisories directing pilots to review Notices to Air Missions before every flight.

Official releases document F-16 intercepts near Keansburg, New Jersey, on June 6 at approximately 1:40 p.m. EDT, during which flares alerted the pilot before escort, and another intercept on June 8 at approximately 9:30 p.m. EDT near the same location.

A June 8 intercept near Bedminster at approximately 3:55 p.m. EDT, combined with four later violations that day, contributed to the 15-incursion total near Bedminster since June 6.

The command and 1st Air Force accounts reported more than 10 violations in the prior three days as of June 9, including seven on a single day.

A June 11 press release summarized the pattern and stated that most TFR violations remain preventable through thorough pref-light planning. The release covered activity for the month and noted more than a dozen violations without releasing additional individual intercept details.

Pentagon Enacts Precautionary Shelter-in-Place and Lock-down After Internal Systems Detect Air Quality Issue
