ENGLISH CHANNEL — Royal Marine Commandos and National Crime Agency officers boarded the sanctioned Russian shadow fleet oil tanker SMYRTOS in international waters of the English Channel in the early hours of June 14.

The six-hour operation was the first UK-led interdiction of its kind against vessels linked to Russian efforts to evade oil sanctions. UK forces secured the vessel, which now sits at anchor off the south coast of England under monitoring while investigations proceed.

The tanker, identified by IMO number 9389100 according to UK sanctions records and vessel tracking data, is a crude oil tanker built in 2009. It loaded more than 100,000 tons of Urals crude, according to vessel tracking data and UK sanctions records, in Russia on June 5 and was en route to India when intercepted.

Vessel tracking and sanctions records indicate the tanker operated under a Cameroon flag of convenience that faced de-registration questions around the time of the boarding.

EUROPE — The National Armed Forces of Latvia (NBS) issued an orange-level air threat alert on June 8 after a foreign UAV entered Latvian airspace. Latvian authorities attributed the incursion to Russian electromagnetic warfare.

NATO Baltic Air Policing fighters (French Rafales from Šiauliai Air Base) were activated. The drone was shot down over an uninhabited area around 10:05 local time. The possible air threat ended and was lifted in all regions by 10:20 local time. No injuries or damage reported, and fragment search is ongoing.

The alert was part of a response to a drone that Latvian authorities attributed to Russian electromagnetic warfare activities. NATO Baltic Air Policing fighters were activated, and the drone was then shot down.

Assessment: Intercepts by allied fighters under Baltic Air Policing have proven capable of addressing diverted drone threats in Latvian airspace. Sustained Russian EW activity creates a persistent risk of additional incursions. Latvian and NATO forces have demonstrated public warning and rapid response, reducing potential for ground impact in this instance.

The IAEA team at the ZNPP observed light smoke rising from the direction of the ZTPP and heard sounds of military activity. ZTPP staff are sheltering as a result of the attack.

The incident has raised serious concern about the ZNPP’s sole remaining off-site power line, which in recent weeks has been disconnected several times, leaving the plant reliant on emergency diesel generators to cool its six reactors and prevent a nuclear accident.

For now, the power line remains connected but the incident comes amid repeated threats to the plant’s external power supply.

In a separate incident on June 3 the ZNPP lost off-site power for approximately 20 minutes after a drone strike on the Nikopolska substation across the Dnipro River.

That marked the 17th such temporary loss during the conflict. Emergency diesel generators supplied power until the line was restored shortly before midnight.

ROMANIA — NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe spoke by phone today with General Gheorghiță VLAD, the Romanian Chief of Defense, after a Russian drone crossed into Romanian airspace overnight and struck an apartment building in the southern area of Galați.

ROMANIA — A Russian drone entered Romanian airspace during overnight attacks on Ukraine and crashed into a residential block of flats in the southern area of Galați on the night of May 28–29, causing a fire.

The Romanian Ministry of National Defense confirmed that one of the drones involved in Russian strikes on civilian and infrastructure targets in Ukraine crossed into Romanian airspace.

Radar systems tracked the drone to the southern area of Galați, where it crashed onto the roof of a block of flats. The impact was followed by a fire. Specialized teams from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Romanian Intelligence Service, and the Romanian Police are operating at the site.

Update (May 29, 2026)

The Romanian General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations reported that the drone struck a 10th-floor apartment in a residential building in Galați, causing a fire.

Two people suffered minor injuries. The drone’s entire explosive payload detonated on impact. Around 70 residents were evacuated, and firefighters extinguished the blaze. Authorities are continuing to investigate.

Separately, Romanian authorities reported finding another drone with a wingspan of approximately 3 metes (9.84 feet) in Maramures county.
