SOUTH AMERICA – A 6.4 to 6.6 magnitude earthquake has struck South America, off the coast of northern Chili, with its magnitude reported differently by two different seismic monitoring agencies.
The German Research Center for Geosciences recorded a 6.6 magnitude, while the United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured it at 6.4. Variations in seismic data can occur due to differing measurement techniques and locations, and initial reports may be updated as further analysis is conducted.
Population density maps show the epicenter around a sparsely populated area of South America. There have been no reported tsunami warnings as a result of the earthquake. This alert will be updated if that changes.
