SHANGHAI - A day after a truck convoy carrying goods into Myanmar caught fire near the border town of Muse in Northern Myanmar as a result of what the country's state media says was an attack by insurgents, China announced that it would be holding live-fire drills near its border with the Southeast Asian country.

"A spokesperson with the People's Liberation Army announced on Saturday that live-fire drills will be conducted on the Chinese side of the China-Myanmar border," Chinese state media China Daily reported.

The convoy incident occurred as Myanmar's military lost control of a number of military outposts and towns to rebels in the largest territorial push against the country's military since it took power in the 2021 government coup. 

According to the United Nations, over 2 million people in Myanmar have been displaced as a result of the escalated conflict in the region.
