While the Philippines claim the Chinese vessel collided with the Philippine vessels, China claims the Philippine vessels collided with the Chinese ship.

U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Ambassador MaryKay L. Carlson: "The 🇺🇸 stands with the 🇵🇭 in condemning the China Coast Guard's dangerous maneuvers near Sabina Shoal that endangered lives and caused damage to two [Philippine Coast Guard] vessels. We are committed to supporting the rights of our [Allies] under international law."

Sabina Shoal is located in the disputed Spratly Islands claimed by China, Taiwan, and Vietnam all claim the islands in their entirety, while portions are claimed by Malaysia and the Philippines, according to the CIA Fact Book on the islands.
