TAIPEI - According to Taiwan's Ministry of Defense 10 Chinese military aircraft, 1 balloon and 8 PLA Navy (PLAN) vessels were spotted around the island of Taiwan on March 16th, 2024. It also reported Taiwan carried out a "recent patrol of combat readiness" to "strengthen the combat contingent capability of combat forces".

The number of Chinese military aircraft and naval forces spotted around the island remains elevated. Additionally, Taiwanese forces worked with the Coast Guard to assist in searching for victims from an incident where a Chinese fishing boat capsized near Dongding Island.

Taiwan's Military News Agency cited its military as saying that it "prioritized humanitarian rescue needs and worked closely with the Coast Guard to assist relevant mainland units in the search and rescue of fishermen who fell into the sea". 

It added, "If the wrecked crew is rescued, they will be taken care of properly and handed over to the Coast Guard for follow-up processing".
