According to Israeli media, the crossing is used primarily to allow pedestrian traffic into and out of the Gaza Strip and has been closed since the attack on October 7th destroyed the crossing and rendered it unusable.

The Israeli military also released a statement saying that the IDF is working closely with U.S. Central Command in preparing to receive a temporary floating pier and to organize the space for receiving humanitarian aid directly in Gaza.
