TOKYO - The Japanese Ministry of Defense has reported that North Korea fired an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) which then landed in the Sea of Japan just outside of the Japanese Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

The Japanese Joint Chief of Staff office initially released a statement that said, (translated): "[North Korean missile] A possible ballistic missile was launched from North Korea. We will notify you as soon as we receive further information".

The Japanese MOD later released another statement that said, “At around 8:24 a.m. today, North Korea fired an ICBM-class ballistic missile toward the northeast from the outskirts of Pyongyang.  

Although the details are currently being analyzed, the launched ballistic missile flew for approximately 73 minutes, and at around 9:37 a.m., it landed in the Sea of ​​Japan (outside Japan's exclusive economic zone (EEZ)) approximately 250 km northwest of Okushiri Island in Hokkaido. “
