PHILIPPINES - The Philippine Coast Guard has released a statement calling on the CCG (Chinese Coast Guard] and CMM [Chinese maritime militia] to "immediately cease any illegal activities within the maritime zones of the Philippines" after it said the Chinese vessels carried out "dangerous maneuvers" around Philippine Coast Guard [PCG] vessels and resupply boats around the Ayungin Shoal which is part of the contested Spratly Island chain.
"Despite the challenging circumstances brought about by the illegal presence and activities of the CCG and CMM in our exclusive economic zone, the mission was carried out successfully," the statement said.
The Chinese Coast Guard and Maritime Militia vessels have increasingly been involved in the harassment of Philippine vessels around the region of the Spratly Islands which are claimed by multiple nations, including China and the Philippines.
