Russian Navy Vessels, Including Kilo-Class Submarine Transit Through Tsushima Strait
The Japanese Ministry of Defense and Self-Defense Forces conducted monitoring using the missile boat Shirataka and P-1 aircraft.
EAST ASIA — Three Russian naval vessels transited the Tsushima Strait northeastward between August 20 and 21, heading toward the Sea of Japan. The vessels include a Kilo-modified class submarine, a Steregushchiy class frigate with hull number 335, and a Bakrazan class rescue tug.
These vessels are the same as those that transited southwestward through the same strait between August 14 and 15. The Japanese Ministry of Defense and Self-Defense Forces conducted monitoring using the missile boat Shirataka and P-1 aircraft.
The transit was detected by the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force around 9:00 p.m. on August 20, in the sea area approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) southwest of Tsushima, Nagasaki Prefecture.
The vessels proceeded northeast through the strait over the following day. No incidents were reported during the transit. The monitoring demonstrates standard procedures for foreign naval movements.
