MIDDLE EAST — U.S. President Donald J. Trump stated on April 28 that Iranian officials informed the United States their country is in a “State of Collapse” and requested immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to resolve their leadership situation.

The statement follows sustained U.S. naval enforcement actions and coincides with Iranian diplomatic outreach proposing a conditional reopening of the waterway.

U.S. Central Command has have maintained the blockade of maritime traffic entering or exiting Iranian ports since April 13.

U.S. forces have directed 38 ships to turn around or return to port. On April 26, the guided-missile destroyer USS Rafael Peralta (DDG 115) enforced the blockade against a vessel attempting to reach an Iranian port.
