CHERNOBYL — On October 1, Ukraine reported a Russian drone attack targeted an energy facility in Slavutych, leading to a blackout at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
The incident caused voltage surges that de-energized the New Safe Confinement structure, which isolates the destroyed fourth reactor unit and prevents radioactive material release. Approximately 20,000 residents in Slavutych were left without electricity.
The outage lasted more than three hours, with safety protocols maintained at the mothballed site. Ukraine reported the attack involved over 20 drones launched in waves. Energy workers responded quickly to restore power, ensuring no immediate threats to the population.
Radiation levels at the plant remained normal and did not exceed control levels. Ukraine reports this event as one of multiple blackouts at Chernobyl since the Russian invasion began in February 2022.
