The drone was reported to have been intercepted by Russian air defense systems near the plant, detonating upon impact and damaging an auxiliary transformer.
This led to a 50 percent reduction in the operating capacity of reactor unit three. The fire was quickly extinguished, with no injuries reported.
Radiation levels at the site and surrounding areas remained normal. Reactor unit one had been decommissioned in 2021, unit two in 2024, unit three was reduced post-incident, and unit four was operating normally.
The incident took place amid Ukraine's Independence Day celebrations, during a wave of drone attacks across Russian regions. The Russian defense ministry reported intercepting 95 Ukrainian drones that day across multiple regions.
The International Atomic Energy Agency was aware of the reports and stated radiation levels were normal near the plant.
