Earlier this week, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa announced Syria’s accession to the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS as its 90th member, marking a shift in regional counter-terrorism alignment since ISIS’s territorial defeat in 2019.

The coalition has since emphasized stabilization and development in formerly ISIS-controlled areas. U.S. efforts also focus on repatriating detainees and displaced persons from camps like al-Hol and al-Roj, where populations have declined from 70,000 in 2019 to below 30,000 today, reducing opportunities for extremist influence among vulnerable women and children.

Admiral Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander, underscored the need for coalition members to accelerate these returns to prevent ISIS regeneration. Building on prior events, these actions reflect sustained efforts against ISIS.
