SEOUL - The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff reported that North Korea has fired a ballistic missile into the East Sea (Sea of Japan) from Wonsan, North Korea.
South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff: "North Korea fires unidentified ballistic missile into East Sea". An additional statement said, "At around 8:10 this morning, we detected several projectiles presumed to be short-range ballistic missiles fired from the Wonsan area of North Korea into the East Sea."
"Our military is maintaining a full readiness posture while closely sharing information related to 'North Korean ballistic missiles' with the U.S. and Japan, while strengthening surveillance and vigilance in preparation for additional launches."
South Korean news agency Yonhap cited a military source stating that the short-range ballistic missile launches may be with the intention of Pyongyang to ship the missiles to Russia after testing.
A military source was cited by the news agency as saying, "Kim Jong-un's recent visit to a shell factory (for export to Russia) and test-firing of short-range and close-range ballistic missiles could be intended to export such weapons to Russia.
