MALI - More than 50 people were killed when a convoy that consisted of around 60 vehicles and its military escort was ambushed near the village of Kobe, located about 18 miles from Gao, Mali in Africa.

Among those killed in the ambush, 20 were civilians, mostly gold miners, according to a military spokesman on Sunday, while the number of military personnel casualties remains unknown.

A spokesman for the military Col. Maj. Souleymane Dembélé told AP news soldiers had assisted the victims, adding that 13 of those who were wounded were transferred to the hospital in Gao.

He also said that four of the attackers were wounded, but would not divulge information on the number of army personnel casualties.

The local hospital in Gao reported that it had recorded up to 56 deaths. A local resident also reported around 50 deaths, adding that the vehicles were set on fire.
