U.S. and Somali Forces Target ISIS-Somalia and Al-Shabaab in Coordinated Operations
The United States has supported Somalia’s counter-terrorism efforts since the early 2000s and has been intensifying airstrikes and military assistance to target both groups.
EAST AFRICA — Between May 31 and June 1, 2025, U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, conducted multiple military operations targeting ISIS-Somalia and Al-Shabaab militants across southern Somalia and the Lower Shabelle region.
These actions, including airstrikes and ground operations, aimed to disrupt the operational capabilities of both terrorist groups, reflecting a sustained effort to enhance security and stability in the Horn of Africa.
