U.S. Coast Guard Response to Chinese Research Vessel in U.S. Arctic Waters

ARCTIC — On Friday, the U.S. Coast Guard detected and responded to the China-flagged research ship Xue Long 2 operating on the U.S. Extended Continental Shelf approximately 290 nautical miles north of Utqiagvik, Alaska.

Locations include various sites throughout Alaska, with municipalities closest to designated military exercise operating areas encompassing Anchorage, Cold Bay, Delta Junction, Fairbanks, Kotzebue, and Nome.

The exercise involves forces from NORAD and USNORTHCOM, including Air Forces Northern, Navy Forces Northern, Special Operations Forces Northern, Alaska National Guard, and U.S. Coast Guard. International partners, such as the United Kingdom, Denmark, and Norway, participate alongside Alaska Native communities.
