Mayor Bowser and Federal Partners Announce Security Plans, Road Closures, and Impacts for the 60th Presidential Inauguration

Monday, January 13, 2025

DC Muriel Bowser, Mayor: (Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser and federal partners shared information about preparations for the 60th Presidential Inauguration, taking place on Monday, January 20, 2025 in the District of Columbia.

The inauguration is a National Special Security Event (NSSE), a classification that brings federal and local partners together under the lead of the United States Secret Service. The NSSE designation allows significant federal, state, and local resources to be deployed, ensuring a robust security plan. District public safety agencies and federal partners have spent nearly a year developing the inaugural security plan.

“Every four years, the District is proud to support the peaceful transition of power,” said Mayor Bowser. “We take pride in this responsibility, and we’re grateful to our federal partners, local agencies, and community members who work together to ensure a safe and secure event.”

Some additional security measures are already going into Place and the public will notice high visibility patrols, fencing and barriers going into place through the coming week. District residents and business owners are asked to plan for widespread road closures across Downtown Washington. Most roads within the perimeter, bounded by the Potomac River to the west, K Street NW to the north, Second Street NE/SE to the east, and I-395/I-695 to the south will be closed or restricted residential traffic only. A comprehensive list of closures is available below.

Road closures, transit impacts and details on accessing the Inauguration will be posted to Inauguration.DC.gov. Residents and visitors can text DCINAUG to 888-777 to receive text updates on inaugural related impacts.

“The security of the 2025 Presidential Inauguration is truly a team effort and we have been working closely with our law enforcement and public safety partners on a comprehensive security plan,” said Matt McCool, the Special Agent in Charge of the Secret Service’s Washington Field Office. “Our ultimate goal is to ensure the safety and security of our protectees, dignitaries, event attendees and the public during the Inauguration.”

“There are no law enforcement agencies more unified than those entrusted with securing the Presidential Inauguration,” said Chief of Police Pamela A. Smith. “Our entire department will be activated for the Presidential Inauguration. In addition, we’ll be reinforced by thousands of officers from across the United States who were generous enough to raise their hand and commit their time to assist Metropolitan Police Department.”

“Leading up to and during the Presidential Inauguration, FBI special agents, intelligence analysts, and other personnel will be working to assess and share intelligence related to the event with our law enforcement partners to ensure the safety of all attendees and participants,” said FBI Washington Field Office Assistant Director in Charge David Sundberg.

“Preparing for the Presidential Inauguration has been a team effort,” said United States Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger. “Just this past week, agencies across the city secured two National Special Security Events. The cooperation among the Washington area law enforcement agencies is second to none.”

DC residents and visitors attending inaugural events or traveling through downtown are encouraged to use Metro as much as possible this weekend.

“Metro is America’s transit system and has played an essential role in moving people during the last twelve inaugurations,” said Metro General Manager and CEO Randy Clarke. “The Metro team will be fully staffed on Monday, and we are ready to accommodate the large volume of customer trips with increased service and an early opening at 4 a.m.”
