General Langley's Visit and Counter-terrorism Efforts in East Africa From June 16-30, 2025
The visit by General Langley coincided with significant counter-terrorism operations in Somalia’s Lower Jubba region.
EAST AFRICA — From June 16 to June 20, 2025, General Michael Langley, Commander of United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), visited Djibouti, Somalia, and Ethiopia to reinforce security partnerships aimed at countering terrorist threats in the region.
This visit coincided with significant counter-terrorism operations in Somalia’s Lower Jubba region, where the Somali National Army (SNA) and its elite Danab Commandos, supported by international partners including the U.S., conducted successful missions against Al-Shabaab militants.
On June 28, an operation in Maqoqaagha village eliminated over 37 Al-Shabaab fighters, including key leaders, while a subsequent operation on June 30 in the Baqoqaah area resulted in 19 additional militant deaths. These efforts underscore the collaborative U.S.-African strategy to dismantle terrorist networks and promote regional stability.
In a statement from Stuttgart, Germany, on June 27, 2025, General Langley highlighted the importance of these partnerships, saying, “Despite the growing threats of terrorist groups like ISIS and al Shabaab, our continued partnership with Djibouti furthers our ability to counter terrorism and promote peace and security.”
This remark, issued by U.S. Africa Command Public Affairs, reflects AFRICOM’s commitment to supporting African-led solutions in the face of rising security challenges across the continent.
