Both vessels operated over the U.S. Extended Continental Shelf. They represent two of five similar Chinese vessels active in the area. The Coast Guard conducts surveillance in conjunction with Northern Command and Alaskan Command.

The responses involved cutters and aircraft to observe vessels in U.S. waters. The Arctic serves as an area of global activity. Operations support defense efforts. Commissioning of new cutters adds to capabilities in the Bering Sea and Arctic.
